Protect yourself from the QR code scam.

  • 1/17/2025

Scammers are always coming up with new tricks to take advantage of people, and one of their recent methods involves QR codes.

But don’t worry! Let’s take a closer look at how these scams work and how you can stay safe.

What’s a QR code?

First, let’s make sure we understand what QR codes are. A QR code is a little square barcode that you can scan with your phone. It usually takes you directly to a website or app. Many businesses use QR codes for things like online menus, coupons, or payment options.

How the scam works

In a QR code scam, a scammer replaces a real QR code with their own. When you scan the fake code, it might look like it’s taking you to a legit website, but instead, it leads to a site controlled by the scammer. You might unknowingly make a payment, and the scammer gets your money. Sometimes, they might also gain access to your phone or personal information.

How to avoid a QR code scam

Don’t worry—there are simple ways to stay safe! When you scan a QR code, make sure to double-check the website it takes you to. Look for signs of a secure site, like a lock symbol and an "https" in the URL. If something seems off, trust your instincts and leave the site. You can always go directly to the merchant’s website or app to make sure everything’s legit. The FBI also suggests avoiding downloading apps from QR codes or getting a QR code scanner app. One simple trick that some scammers use is placing fake QR code stickers over the real ones.

Here are some red flags to watch out for:

  • The URL doesn’t match the company’s official website.
  • The QR code looks like it’s been changed or tampered with (like on a public sign).
  • The website has spelling mistakes or looks unprofessional.
  • The QR code is a sticker, which might be obstructing the real code.

What to do if you’re scammed

If you think you’ve fallen for a QR code scam, like if a company says you didn’t make the payment or it didn’t go through, contact them right away. Let them know the QR code might have been tampered with. You can also report the scam to the FTC.

Stay safe, stay aware, and trust your instincts!
